THY will increase the frequency of its flights from seven to ten a week as of 15 July, the onset of the peak tourist season, in view of the increasing demand for the direct aerial connection between Budapest and Istanbul.

The Turkish national carrier transported approximately 90 000 passengers between Budapest and Istanbul last year, and is forecasting a significant increase for this year, potentially up to 115 000 passengers, said Levend Arisoy, country manager for Turkish Airlines, during the handover of the new office.

Turkish Airlines plans to maintain the ten flights per week during the winter period as well, since there are indications that passengers favor the comfortable transfer opportunities offered by the Turkish carrier to the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Australia. This is supported by the fact that, according to the statistics, approximately 40 percent of passengers traveling to Istanbul are headed to the city located on the border between Europe and Asia, whilst another 40 percent transfer to other Turkish flights operating to other foreign destinations and 20 percent change to Turkish domestic flights to Antalya, Izmir and other popular Turkish holiday resorts.

Last year Turkish Airlines carried no less than 29 million passengers to 139 cities worldwide, and operated an additional 42 domestic flights within Turkey. THY’s fleet consists of 164 airliners, largely manufactured by Airbus and Boeing, and 5 cargo aircraft. The Budapest flight is most frequently operated with Airbus A 320 and 321 aircraft. The Istanbul-based national carrier is a member of Star Alliance, the world’s largest airline association, along with other influential carriers such as Lufthansa, United Airlines, Swiss, SAS, BMI British Midland and Continental.
