Air Southwest is ending the Plymouth to Gatwick route - which goes via Newquay - as new owner Humberside-based Eastern Airways is seeking to cut costs.Plymouth's Chamber of Commerce said its final attempt to persuade Air Southwest to maintain the London link failed.
The move means no airlines will offer flights from Devon to london. It also sees Air Southwest axing its Newquay to Gatwick flights.
The airline is blaming falling passenger numbers and high landing fees at Gatwick for the cut.
The flight left Plymouth at 1630 GMT, flew to Newquay and then departed for London from Cornwall at 1705 GMT.
Air Southwest, which was founded in 2003, scrapped its service to London City Airport last May.
Flybe will become the only airline offering a London service from South West England, with its flights from Newquay to Gatwick, but no flights from Devon.
The Devon and Cornwall Business Council described Air Southwest's decision as "inevitable", but a "major blow" to the economy in both counties.Business leaders and local economists have said they now fear for the future of Plymouth Airport itself because of the cutting of the route.
He said: "It's never really had enough of a catchment area. The population isn't really big enough - you need about four million people in an area.
"It's being squeezed by flights into Newquay and Exeter, and even more probably by the fact that Easjyet and Ryanair have loads and loads of flights going out of Bristol."
Airport owner Sutton Harbour Holdings said the the airport has made losses, but said it had no intention of making knee-jerk reactions based on the loss of one route.
The city has had an operational airport at its current location since 1925.

flights Cardiff to china with KLM
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines expands its network from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Welsh passengers are now able to fly to chinese destinations from Cardiff airport via Amsterdam
Scheduled services to Xiamen Airport in China commenced at the end of March 2011. Xiamen is the seventh destination available on the KLM network from Amsterdam to China and further strengthens the airline’s position in this fast growing Asian market. Dutch airline KLM now operates 43 weekly flights to various Chinese destinations including Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Shanghai and Hong Kong, as well as the new Xiamen service. In addition, KLM’s SkyTeam partner China Southern Airlines offers connecting flights from Xiamen to and from a host of regional destinations across China.
For the Summer schedule 2011, KLM have also increased its European connections with flights to the Danish city of Aalborg. Flights to Aalborg from Cardiff will be available twice daily via Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and this is the third destination served by KLM in Denmark alongside Billund and Copenhagen. Swift connection times from as little as 55 minutes at Schiphol allow passengers from Cardiff to connect to worldwide destinations from the comfort and convenience of a local departure airport.
We’re aware of many travellers who frequently drive to London airports to catch flights, and often the flights to long haul destination aren’t direct even after making the long journey down the M4. The new connecting flights give travellers in South Wales the chance to explore different parts of the world from their local airport, and we hope the KLM network will continue to expand their offer with even more connecting services from Cardiff via Amsterdam.”

bmibaby to cease flights to Cardiff Airport
discount airline bmibaby will cease flights to Cardiff Airport from the end of the summer 2011 flying schedule.
The airline, which is also withdrawing from Manchester, started operating out of Cardiff in winter 2002.The firm, which employs 69 at Cardiff, blamed the economic climate, saying it would focus on airports with strong growth opportunities.
It started with 12 destinations and more than 100 flights a week to UK and European destinations from the city, having first launched at East Midlands airport earlier that year. bmibaby currently operates nine routes from Cardiff - to Geneva, Faro, Belfast City, Malaga, Murcia, Alicante, Ibiza, Palma and Mahon.
The company said it would transfer two Boeing 737 aircraft currently based at Cardiff, and two more based at Manchester, to Belfast, Birmingham and East Midlands airports. Cabin crew and pilots based at Cardiff and Manchester would be offered the chance to redeploy to the Midlands.
The airline has announced seven new routes from George Best Belfast City Airport. A year-round service to Amsterdam will also operate from October 2011, along with winter flights to Geneva for 2011.
"The sun and the sand is still available - there aren't many routes that weren't covered by somebody other than bmibaby so it's not as if there's going to be an inability to get somewhere."
The airport said last month had seen the start of the Helvetic Airways 4 weekly service to Zurich achieved through a joint partnership approach. It said it looked forward to working with other airlines and other partners "to facilitate increased opportunities going forward".

Guernsey airport parking prices set to rise
price of parking for six hours or more at Guernsey Airport is set to rise from 1 July, but the first hour will remain free. Short-term parking, for up to 2 hours, is also being frozen at £3.
It is the first time airport car park prices have increased since February 2010. Day-trip charges will rise from £3 to £4 for up to six hours, and from £4 to £5 for a day trip between six and 12 hours. Longer term parking charges will also rise from £8 a day to £10 a day.
Guernsey Airport director Colin Le Ray said income from the car parking was a key revenue stream, and helped to keep air passenger charges down. However even after the increase, Guernsey Airport’s parking would still represent good value. ‘We are keeping the first hour’s free parking, which is ideal for people picking up or seeing off friends and relatives. After that the charges for longer stays will still compare well with other airports,’ he said. ‘We have to be mindful of the fact that unlike somewhere in the UK, our passengers are not travelling long distances so the cost of alternative transport is much lower. However people like the convenience of being able to drive to the airport, and have their own car there for them when they get back. That is essentially the service we are offering.’ The increased charges are forecast to raise an additional £150,000 a year.

qantas flights delayed by Chile volcano ash
Flights are gradually resuming from airports across Australia after two days of cancellations caused by an ash cloud from a Chilean volcano.
Qantas airways plane took off from Adelaide on Wednesday morning. Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney airports were expected to resume flights later.
But the ash is heading towards New Zealand, where disruption is expected.
Flights to New Zealand will continue to be disrupted by the ash cloud, but Civil Aviation Safety Authority spokesman Peter Gibson said it was possible all flight schedules would return to normal on Thursday. Many travellers spent the night at airports as flights were disrupted for the second time in just over a week.
"The volcano is still erupting but not at the same levels. It is very unusual for ash clouds to do two circuits of the globe," he said.
Despite the forecast, passengers are still facing significant delays and are advised to contact their airlines for updates.
Qantas said it expected 30,000 to be delayed, on top of the 20,000 who were left stranded by Tuesday's disruption.
Last week, tens of thousands of people had their travel plans ruined as ash from the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano passed over several Australian cities and New Zealand.
By last Friday, all flights were running normally, but the ash cloud circled the Earth for a second time and caused further disruption.
This time, the plume hovered at between 20,000 and 40,000ft (6-13km), which experts advised was too low for airlines to fly underneath.
If volcanic ash particles are ingested into a jet engine, they accumulate and clog it with molten glass, which can cause the engine to shut down.
Greyhound is running extra bus services in Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane to help clear the backlog, while trains between Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne will have extra carriages.
The Tourism and Transport Forum said the ash had caused the largest disruption to Australia's aviation industry since a pilots' strike in 1989.
Analysts at Macquarie Equities estimate the disruptions will cost Qantas about $21m and Virgin $11m.

Air Nigeria Lagos London Gatwick flights
Air Nigeria is to launch new international route outside Africa with a daily London-Lagos route from 1 September, strengthening the links between the financial and economic centres of the UK and Nigeria.
Flights will depart from London Gatwick airport daily at 2230, arriving into Lagos at 0430 the next day, with the return leg leaving Nigeria at 1410 and landing back into London LGW at 2010. Air Nigeria will operate the A340-300 airplane, which flies 295 passengers in two-class seating configuration, from Gatwick’s South Terminal.
Air Nigeria’s preference to operate its London-Lagos route from Gatwick sends a strong message that Gatwick is changing and becoming the London airport of choice for airlines wishing to establish and develop a strong London network. It follows other airlines who have, over the past few years, chosen to move their services or entire operations from other London airports to London Gatwick, such as airberlin and Norwegian.
David Amurun, Air Nigeria’s Country Manager for the UK said: “Air Nigeria’s return to its long hub operations with a London-Lagos route is exciting news for passengers. Gatwick Airport has excellent links into London and the South East making it easily accessible for business travellers and passengers wishing to fly between the UK and Nigeria to spend time with friends and family. We look forward to commencing flights in September. “
Gatwick also has spare capacity to grow on its single runway, which enables airlines to expand their operations and achieve their own growth potential. This, combined with its
£1 billion investment programme and its quick and direct links into central London are helping to position Gatwick as the London airport of choice.

Road Runners UK becomes Gatwick Airport official taxi
Local Horley-based company - Road Runners UK - becomes Gatwick Airport’s new official taxi-service provider
“We’re delighted to have Airport Cars – Gatwick on board and welcome its commitment to delivering excellent customer service.”
Airport Cars – Gatwick, part of Road Runners UK, demonstrated its commitment to offering passengers an excellent service that represents good value for money, and to invest in new facilities and customer-service training for the drivers. For example, Airport Cars – Gatwick will invest in new facilities for the drivers, including upgrading the airport driver rest room, as well as new computer systems to improve the passenger booking service.
This commitment to improving services for passengers is fully in line with the aspirations of the ‘new’ Gatwick, which is investing £1 billion to modernise the airport facilities and deliver great services for passengers to, through and from the airport.
Gatwick is a significant contributor to the local economy, generating around £2 billion each year. Gatwick is also responsible for the employment of around 23,000 people, one third of whom live in Crawley. It was therefore important to Gatwick that whoever was appointed as the new taxi service provider would commit to employing all 252 drivers from the previous supplier – who are all local to the area. Airport Cars – Gatwick has honoured that commitment.
Commenting on the contract award, Jeremy Bennett, External Business Development Manager at Gatwick Airport said: “ Each year, around 14% of our 32 million passengers use a taxi service to get to and from the airport. With our £1 billion investment programme, we are working hard to improve the overall airport experience for passengers, and that includes their travel options. That is why we have brought in a new on-airport taxi service provider and built into the contract a customer-service standard agreement that aligns with our own commitments to excellent customer-service.

Icelandair fly to Glasgow from Reykjavik
Icelandair announced new nonstop flights from Glasgow to Iceland starting 20th September 2011. The new flights will operate three times per week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. These flights will replace the current Glasgow – Reykjavik – Manchester - Glasgow “triangle route” and connect to Icelandair’s North American destinations.
The result will be additional capacity from Glasgow, as well as quicker elapsed flying times to Icelandair’s North American destinations like Boston, New York City and Seattle. With the new flights, Icelandair will become the carrier with the fastest elapsed flying time from Glasgow to Boston, New York City (JFK), Orlando and Seattle.
Francois Bourienne, Commercial Director at Glasgow Airport, said: “Icelandair’s re-introduction of direct flights to Reykjavik is great news for our customers, as it will significantly reduce the travel time both to Iceland and onwards to North America.” He added, “Although popular, the ‘triangle route’ was not always a convenient option and Icelandair should be congratulated for recognising this and improving its service offering. I’ve every confidence it will prove successful and help boost passenger numbers.”
Icelandair is one of Iceland’s longest established companies, connecting the world and Iceland for over 70 years. Icelandair flies from the UK to Iceland with connecting service to Boston, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York City, Orlando, Seattle, Washington, DC, Halifax and Toronto.

Hugh Aitken, easyJet’s commercial manager for Scotland, said: "Our flights between Scotland and London boast some of the highest percentages of business travellers across our entire network, so we wanted to thank Scottish customers for their loyalty by introducing these new and exciting products. In addition, passengers can avoid the hassle of Heathrow by choosing to fly to one of the three other London airports served by easyJet.”
“The airline’s Glasgow to London routes are already well used by business travellers, and the addition later this year of the fourth daily flight to Gatwick will further strengthen Glasgow Airport’s connectivity with London.”
